• Overview

Simon Gaiger (b. 1965) is a sculptor who works mainly in wood and steel. His work also includes seats and tables – sculptures, completed and brought to life by human interaction.

Influences are drawn from his life and surroundings. His current home in Wales and a childhood living in Uganda, Sudan, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Cornwall and the Falkland Islands has meant that the landscapes and mythologies of these places echo through his work. Knowledge gathered during time spent as a shipwright’s assistant and shepherd, as well as training in landscape construction has also shaped his work.

There is a raw tension of opposing forces in his pieces - elements strain and pull against each other or balance precipitously. Many of them can be re-configured, changing the interplay of spaces within and around them, inviting participation from the viewer. It is the energy of his forms and the universality of their themes that give his sculptures their lasting resonance.
