I’m interested in ritual and how people incorporate pots into their lives, so by giving pots multiple functions I like seeing how these become part of people’s individual rituals, or become ritualised into stories. This pot can be used for flower arrangements or candles, the candles suffusing the glaze with a warm glow. The lid is topped with a lion dog, or Koma inu finial. These are figures that flank the entrances to temples, guardians or custodians of sorts. I usually make these just as figures and they are always made and sent off into the world as pairs, but there is only one on this pot because I made its partner to guard a different candelabra pot, that has found its home elsewhere. Stories are then made that intertwine people, sharing their counterparts.
