SALT HORIZON: Joni Sternbach

Overview
CIRCLE are thrilled to be showing a solo exhibition SALT HORIZON by Joni Sternbach, featuring a selection of limited edition prints taken from her world famous SURFLAND and SURFBOARD series.
New York-based photographer Joni Sternbach takes portraits of surfers from around the world. She creates large-format Tintype photographs which document surfing culture in a way that recalls early ‘wild west’ photography, drawing attention to the grace and individuality of the people and landscapes she photographs. She combines old and new photographic methods in a way which gives the subject a beautiful and ghostly timelessness. Joni was runner up at the 2017 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery.
This exhibition features rare limited edition XL prints from Joni’s sold-out books Surfland and Surfboard. In SURFLAND, surfers are captured posing on rocks or in front of sat-bleached driftwood, demonstrating their affinity with their board and their environment. SURFBOARD looks at the surfboard as an object, tracing the roots of the sport to Hawaii – uncovering layers of historical meaning, cultural clashes, and the joy of the surfboard and its origins.FRAMING / DELIVERY: All artworks displayed are framed and the prices are included on the website.
