Ed Burkes

Ed Burkes’ work centres on the pursuit of feeling—the subtle, intangible terrain that painting can hold without needing to be named. 

During a recent residency in the south of France, he painted exclusively from observation, working outdoors with an easel. This slowing down and gathering of fragments over time became anchors in the studio, continuing to speak not as literal scenes but as emotional residues. Through this process, his practice has shifted toward a clarity where the resolution lies in listening to what each painting asks for. 

Burkes often describes painting as holding up a torch in a dark cave, where sustained attention uncovers hidden textures and forms. His work reveals truth not through certainty but through possibility, capturing the moments when feeling translates into form—a quiet confrontation with our shared mortality.

In the act of making, he seeks to illuminate the threads that bind humanity together. His paintings are a meditation on memory, resilience, and hope, offering a kaleidoscopic vision of the stars above and the future ahead. Each piece is, in his words, a love letter to strength and the promise that tomorrow will be better.
