Susan Bleakley
New Arrivals 2025年5月31日 - 6月30日 Susan Bleakley is a multi talented British artist utilising the mediums of paint, sculpture, installation, photography and film. She studied at the Royal College of Art and the Falmouth College of Arts. Susan Bleakley primarily studied sculpture although she now works in many different mediums. Her work has exhibited extensively throughout the UK, Europe and North America in mixed and solo shows.
Susan’s respect for ‘mother earth’ became inseparable from her art - her large colourfield paintings exude quietude; she says they are about stripping back veils to reveal the internal voice. Susan’s perfectly balanced paintings resound with smooth flowing energy.
Formally, these paintings are labelled as pure abstraction and have the meditative rigour of American abstract painter Agnes Martin, herself drawn to the spiritual purity of the North American Indian life - inseparable from nature. The Bauhaus master Josef Albers with his writings on colour theory, had a huge influence on 20th century abstract painters - Brigit Riley’s famous stripe paintings being our best known example of simultaneous contrast. Susan’s use of this technique is nuanced and beautiful, Her choice of colours quiver with light, inside and out, in synergy with the flowers and foliage growing in her clifftop garden - which she tends to daily. 继续 -
Adrian Holmes: Greenhouse & Stone
2025年4月30日 - 6月19日 Adrian Holmes is a printmaker whose practice is rooted in the tradition of Japanese woodblock printmaking and the Sōsaku Hanga movement. A graduate of the University of Plymouth with a degree in Visual Arts, Adrian first encountered Japanese printmaking while living in Japan, where he developed a deep connection to the craft and its rich history.
Both self-taught and mentored by Japanese woodblock artisans, Adrian has spent years exploring the technical and expressive possibilities of the process. His work reflects a dedication to the materials and methods of traditional mokuhanga, while embracing the creative independence central to Sōsaku Hanga.
Now based in Cornwall, Adrian divides his time between his woodblock practice and teaching. He shares his expertise in Japanese woodblock printmaking at both the St Ives School of Painting and West Dean College of Arts.
In his latest body of work, Greenhouse & Stone, Adrian Holmes brings together 20 woodblock prints, loosely inspired by his local ramblings — both indoors and outdoors — and his novice appreciation of plants and his evolving relationship with them. The work explores shifting perspectives and viewpoints, reflecting on how these remarkable things take root around us.
Following the Sōsaku Hanga tradition, the prints embrace looseness and abstraction, shaped by the expressive and spontaneous nature of mark-making and layering. Each piece is crafted using the traditional processes and techniques of Japanese woodblock printing, balancing the rich craft tradition with contemporary interpretation.
Sōsaku Hanga (創作版画), or 'creative printmaking', is a style of Japanese woodblock printmaking that emerged in the early 20th century, particularly in the 1910s. It was a departure from the traditional ukiyo-e (woodblock prints of the Edo period), in which different craftsmen specialised in different stages of the printmaking process (design, carving, and printing).
In contrast, Sōsaku Hanga emphasises the artist's direct involvement in every stage of the process — from designing and carving the woodblocks to printing the final image. This style allowed artists greater creative freedom and encouraged a more personal, expressive approach to printmaking. The prints often reflect modern themes, abstract elements, and innovative uses of texture and colour.
While ukiyo-e prints were generally produced in large editions for mass consumption, Sōsaku Hanga was more experimental and artistic, focusing on fewer prints that conveyed a deeper, more individualistic expression of the artist's vision. Artists associated with Sōsaku Hanga include notable figures like Kawase Hasui, Shoji Hamada, and Toshi Yoshida.
The movement had a significant influence on the development of modern printmaking, both in Japan and internationally.

Polished Silence by Charlotte Turner
2025年4月19日 - 6月13日 Charlotte Turner is a Devon-based artist whose contemplative practice explores the rhythms of the natural world through an intuitive, process-led response to coastal landscapes.
Drawn to the quiet poetry of beach-combing along the south-west coastline, Turner gathers weathered pebbles and shoreline fragments—objects imbued with memory and time. These elemental forms inform her work both materially and conceptually, serving as meditations on presence, erosion and the passage of time.
Working with a restrained palette, Turner builds luminous surfaces through successive, delicate layers of paint, sanding back between applications. The resulting works—sometimes realised in a handful of layers, at other times in over thirty—appear textural yet reveal a polished, tactile finish evocative of sea-worn stones. This material sensitivity and insistence on surface speaks to a deep consideration of form, memory and touch.
Integral to her practice is a solitary, meditative discipline incorporating daily rituals that foster reflection and creative clarity. Each painting emerges as a quiet act of devotion—an exploration of the liminal space between land, sea and self.
Turner is a trustee of the Brisons Veor Charitable Trust Artists’ Residency and a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. Her parallel work as a creativity coach with Beacon Psychology further reflects her commitment to the intersection of art and mental wellbeing. Through her practice, Turner offers a nuanced meditation on materiality, landscape and the restorative power of making.

New Paintings by Amy Wright
2025年1月1日 - 5月20日 Amy Wright, an Australian artist, brings forth paintings that unfold like a rich tapestry of botanical abundance, intricately woven into the essence of overgrown gardens. Given her affinity for these lush landscapes, it comes as no surprise that, for Amy, the world of art begins and concludes with the intricate beauty of flowers.
Wright's artistic approach involves a harmonious marriage of keen observational skills, akin to the precision required for botanical illustration, and a more relaxed form of observational drawing that accentuates texture, colour, and collage, contributing to her distinctive decorative style.
The viewer's gaze experiences a constant dance across the canvas-traversing from one succulent patch of foliage to another, suspended without finding a definitive resting place.
This deliberate visual journey fosters a sense of suspension, inviting the audience to linger in the intricate details of her work. The predominant warm colour palette she employs evokes the flushed putty tones reminiscent of the Bloomsbury Group painters, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
Wright's paintings are characterised by the form of pattern, a motif that finds resonance in works like 'A World Beyond! This aspect of her art brings to mind the post-impressionist canvases of Edouard Vuillard, who drew inspiration from Hokusai and the flat pictorial space seen in Japanese woodblock printing. Amy's appreciation for fragmented textile surfaces transforms her paintings into intricate jigsaw puzzles-baroque landscapes that echo earthly delights. In this fusion of influences and techniques, Amy Wright's art, rooted in her Australian identity, becomes a visual narrative that captivates, intrigues, and pays homage to a rich tradition in art history.
Amy Wright's work is held in numerous private and corporate collections, a testament to the widespread appeal and impact of her art. Her unique approach to landscape painting, blending classical techniques with contemporary perspectives, has garnered international acclaim. 继续 -

Lee Johnson
2024年10月1日 - 12月16日 Lee Johnson was born in Wiltshire, and has lived and worked in London since 2000. He received his MA Fine Art from Central Saint Martins School of Art in 2001, and his works are held in the collections of Soho House, Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, and University of the Arts London, as well as numerous private collections worldwide (including UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, USA, and Australia).
Johnson begins by painting objects or images close to hand - the daily essentials that make us who we are. These images then take on different forms through the painting process, where the transmutation from the original object or image slowly frees the painting to become something else entirely.
Johnson's paintings are not strictly still lives or portraits, or pure abstractions, as they are composed in the painting of the painting. They are drawn and characterised through the process of painting, creating a soulful construct of what the object or environment could be.
His paintings are thick with activity, marking the physical building of the picture, and paintings are often left a long time before completing. All original impetus is buried under the newer layers of paint, accruing new meaning. But underlying images and layers aren't 'lost', they are the drives that take the painting forward, that give the paintings' their complex personality.

New Arrivals: Joni Sternbach
2024年9月1日 - 10月31日 CIRCLE is delighted to present the latest limited edition prints by American artist Joni Sternbach. Each print measures 40 x 32 inches and is part of a limited edition of 5 per print.
Joni Sternbach takes tintype photographs, a labor-intensive technique with little changed since its invention in the 1850s. Spontaneous and unpredictable, the streaks and tonal variations in the finished photographs reflect their handmade character, with the corners rubbed where they were held in the camera.
Posing on rocky outcrops, in front of uprooted trees, or on thick mats of woody flotsam, Sternbach’s surfers inhabit strange landscapes. The best of Sternbach’s photographs convey insistent longing. They explore relationships—between surfer and board, human and landscape, photographer and subject, and between the surfers themselves. Sternbach has discovered a new home—a place without walls, defined only by belonging and the physicality of existence.
Sternbach is an American artist, photographer, and filmmaker. Over the course of a career spanning many decades, her portrait-based work explores themes such as domesticity and the family, sexuality and the body. Issues of gender, identity, and feminism were the most critical themes in her early work from the 1980s-1990s, where the female figure—including her own—was a central motif. 继续 -

With a keen eye for the charged and nostalgic atmosphere of these settings, his works evoke a sense of familiarity and longing. 继续 -

A PLACE OF PASSAGE
NICHOLAS ARROYAVE-PORTELA, HELEN BOOTH , EMILY CROOKSHANK 2021年8月7日 - 8月31日 The gallery is delighted to announce that we will for the first time be showing work from celebrated British abstract artist Helen Booth, whose latest oil paintings are the result of a recent residency in Iceland and depart from the mark mapping typical in her practice. The pre-Columbian pottery style of British-born artist Nicholas Arroyave-Portela derives from his Latin American roots; using materials from the earth, the artist has produced an incredible body of work over the past two decades informed by his experience of migration. Printmaker Emily Crookshank, who explores line and form with a tonally minimal palette and who, since relocating to Scotland has mastered the craft of etching, and in the process discovered the limitless nature of printmaking.
Unifying all of the artists’ works is the influence of nature, and the use of natural materials to create original art forms that allude to heritage, the passing of time, place, and connection through being. 继续 -

Pleasure-go-round
Simon Gaiger and Bernard Irwin | Floor 2 2021年7月3日 - 7月31日 Openly decorative and anxiety free: In these paintings and coloured sculptures we are reminded of the guiltless museum art of 60’s America and the post Matissean paintings of Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland whose shapes were a prop for colour. Nolan said in 1969 “I want to have colour be the origin of painting” - like Noland, Irwin and Gaigers works tease us with gorgeous colour - formal hedonism. 继续 -

It can contain contaminants, minerals, debris, and detritus. It can damage – uproot vegetation but gently carry its seed. It can create a multitude of sounds in its movement and yet at times travel peacefully in silence. It can be affected by external influences – light and dark, heat and air in motion. Water is constantly changing its condition. 继续 -
