• Overview

Eline Martherus (b.1992) is an Amsterdam-based contemporary painter whose practice explores the dynamics between individuals, society and the natural rhythms that shape human experience. Working intuitively across large-scale canvases, Martherus creates abstract compositions that balance opposing forces — light and dark, logic and intuition, movement and stillness — inviting viewers into contemplative and emotionally charged spaces.

Drawing on her background in textile innovation, Martherus approaches painting with a deeply material sensitivity. Using pouring techniques, natural pigments such as indigo and unprimed cotton canvases, she allows paint to settle and flow organically through the fibres of the fabric. Her process is both experimental and instinctive, treating pigment almost alchemically as she develops layered surfaces rich in texture, movement and atmosphere.

Martherus’ work is inspired by the ever-changing rhythms of nature and the complexities of contemporary social dynamics. Through fluid forms and evolving compositions, her paintings reflect the interconnectedness of people and their environments, suggesting harmony can emerge even within tension and polarisation. Her large-scale works often originate from a single ‘mother cloth’, later divided into smaller fragments — a process that mirrors transformation, impermanence and the continual evolution of life itself.

Blending abstraction with references to sacred geometry, textile traditions and organic pattern formations, Martherus creates immersive works that feel both expansive and intimate. Her paintings encourage viewers to reflect on movement, change and the possibility of finding balance within complexity.
