We are pleased to welcome Nick Jones to CIRCLE.
Born in Bristol in 1965, Nick studied Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic and worked for three years in stained glass before returning to painting in 1990. He has shown with Crane Kalman Gallery, London, ever since. Landscape, abstraction, colour and light have long been the dominant themes of his work, drawn from his Somerset home and from journeys further afield, including Finnish Lapland and the Arctic.
In 2018 he was appointed Arctic Artist in Residence with the Friends of the Scott Polar Research Institute. Back in the studio, working in acrylic on canvas and more recently in silkscreen, he draws rich and varied beauty from the simplest of elements: ice, rock, water and light. In 2022 the Royal Geographical Society awarded him the Cherry Kearton Medal for his polar paintings.
“At this time when our planet is heating at an unprecedented rate, icebergs speak with haunting poignancy. And yet they seem so composed and contained, utterly at ease and wonderfully responsive to the changing light and colour of the sea. At a personal symbolic level, I find icebergs to be beautiful images of trust, surrender and letting go, all qualities that I aspire to. It is my hope that these paintings may speak of the beauty and fragility of the Arctic but also, in some small way, open up space and light for others, just as my time in the Arctic did for me.” — Nick Jones
Selected works are now on view in the gallery and online.
